We don’t know if it’s because we’re parents now or just because the aftermath has become that little bit harder to deal with, but all-nighter New Year’s Eve parties just ain’t so cool anymore. Lots of events involve expensive tickets and it’s nigh on impossible to find someone willing to babysit on the biggest night out of the year.
Fear not though, parents. There’s no need to miss out on the celebrations just because you have little ones, especially when there are so many family-friendly ways to ring in the New Year. Here are three of our favourite fun-for-all-the-family ways to say hello to 2019.
Organise a Family Getaway
If you’ve got little ones who can’t stay up until midnight, make the days surrounding New Year’s Eve the celebration instead. A trip away can be as extravagant or homely as you like, from a mini break abroad to renting out a cottage in the English countryside. We love the latter option because the rental costs can always be split between friends and family, meaning that everyone can be together no matter their age! Rental cottages also make for a perfect NYE setting as children get an exciting holiday and the adults get to have a fun party knowing their children are safely tucked up in bed upstairs.
If you do have the itch to really get away, there are plenty of great places to spend New Year’s Eve outside of England. Scotland’s Hogmanay is an amazing celebration that’s fun for all the family while travel agents also offer plenty of last-minute deals if you fancy welcoming the new year in the sunshine.
New Year’s with a Bang
The huge New Year’s Eve fireworks displays that go on in most major cities are pretty well-known but, since they usually go off at midnight, don’t really solve the ‘past our bedtime’ problem. Luckily, they aren’t the only displays around! Plenty of venues host family-friendly fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve with a show that starts at a more reasonable hour.
This is a pretty comprehensive list of family-friendly displays happening around the UK including Cardiff City Centre’s Winter Wonderland, Gully’s Around the World New Year’s Celebrations in Warrington, the Bairns Afore event at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, and New Year’s Eve at Wookey Hole.
Cheat the Countdown
Wherever you are this New Year’s Eve, parents with little ones always face the eternal problem of the New Year countdown. Children don’t want to feel like they’re missing out on the excitement of counting down to the new year but just can’t stay up until midnight.
Luckily, Netflix has your back! If you write ‘Countdown’ in the Netflix search bar, you’ll find loads of pre-prepared, on-demand countdowns featuring characters from all your children’s favourite TV shows. Get dressed up, whip up a few mocktails, and put a countdown on just before bedtime. That way the kids will feel like they’ve been a part of the excitement and you don’t have to spend New Year’s Day fending off overtired little monsters.
