(Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm)

Ah, half-term; great for kids, not so great for the adults responsible for entertaining them. As with anything in life, half-term is fine if you’ve got hundreds of pounds spare to spend on camps and trips but things get trickier if you’re watching the pennies.  If the half-term schedule is down to you this year, here are some great (and free!) activities for thrifty parents.

Get Involved

A fun day out doesn’t have to cost the earth. This half-term there are hundreds of free events taking place around the UK that your little ones are bound to love. The Family Arts Festival at the Foundling Museum in London has loads of free events running throughout October while elsewhere the Brighton Fringe Festival has lots of family-friendly shows and workshops, and the Gruffalo comes to the Lowry in Manchester for free meet-and-greets throughout half-term.
Get Skillful

Half-term is the perfect time to perfect a new skill and luckily plenty of kids’ workshops are taking place this October that don’t charge a thing. From bike workshops to learning all about your pets there are hundreds of new skills to be learnt – all for free!

Get Active

There’s nothing more free than fresh air and getting out and about is a great way to entertain the kids this half-term (as well as tiring them out so you can relax a bit yourself). Get exploring with the Urban Hike in Manchester or have a look at the National Trust’s Top 10 Family Walks around the UK. If your little ones are sporty, also make sure to look out for free football camps, tennis lessons and swimming sessions near you.

Get Learning

Spending half-term learning might not sound like your kids’ idea of fun but that’s because they don’t know just how exciting museums and galleries can be. Some of the UK’s best museums are absolutely free and this half-term there’s plenty to keep little minds busy; see real-life mummies at the British Museum, meet mad scientists at the Science Museum or come face-to-face with a dinosaur at the Natural History Museum.

Get Spooky

Of course we can’t forget that every October half-term has a distinctly spooky vibe as we get closer to Halloween. There are plenty of free Halloween events going on around the UK but some of our highlights include the Forbidden Forest at the Lowry Outlet and the Hair-Raising Halloween Discovery Day at the Education Centre in Hyde Park.

So there you have it; all you need for a fabulously fun and fantastically free October half-term!
