As much as we don’t want it to, the time comes when our little baby becomes a not-so-little child and their beautiful nursery just doesn’t fit the bill anymore. If you’ve got to the stage where you need to transition from nursery to child’s bedroom, here are some of our top tips for making the change.
The best bed
For many parents, a little one outgrowing their cot is one of the main reasons to upgrade a nursery. You can choose to go straight to a regular child’s bed if you like but it is recommended that younger children often need a transition bed to help them adjust to no longer being in a cot. In that case, your best bet is a toddler bed or a starter/shorty bed. Both these types of beds are smaller than usual – to help fight against feelings of being ‘lost’ in a bigger space – as well as being lower to the ground with safety rails that prevent any falling or accidents.
Work with the colour scheme
Transforming a nursery doesn’t always have to require a complete overhaul. Whether yours is currently decorated in traditional pastels or boldly colourful, children’s furniture and bedding comes in a huge range of colours that you can match to your existing scheme – saving you an entire day’s worth of painting!
Update your storage
One thing you will need to work on is storage. As your little one grows up, they’ll start to accumulate more clothes and toys and you’ll need somewhere to put them. If you’ve got tons of space then adding storage is easy but if your child’s bedroom is on the smaller side, make the most of the space you do have with nifty solutions like under bed drawers. If you’re a fan of up-cycling, you can even work with your existing furniture to saving having to add any more. That nursery changing unit with all those drawers and shelves? That would make for some great toy storage if you ask us…
Plan for the future
While your child might still be too young to require a desk or work-space just yet, planning for the future can be the best way to save space and money. Rather than having to buy a separate desk later, buy a bed with a built-in desk now to double up on furniture and make a saving.
