A trundle bed is very popular with families who need a spare bed for when friends and family come to stay. If used with a single bed it increases a rooms’ sleeping capacity to two, and with a bunk bed, you will have three functional beds.

What Is A Trundle Bed?

A trundle bed is a bed with a trundle drawer that fits neatly underneath the main bed frame and rolls-out when you need it. All you need to do is pop a mattress into the drawer, make the bed up and you will have an instant spare bed.

When not in use, the drawer sits under the bed so it’s perfect for maximising floor space in the bedroom. However, you will need to consider the extra floor space required when the trundle drawer is fully pulled out and in use.

Alternatively, the drawer can be used for storage if you don’t add a mattress. The drawer is large so it’s an excellent storage option that many parents utilise until their little one is bigger and starts wanting sleepovers.

Always read the product information as some trundle drawers take a bespoke mattress size and may differ from the mattress used on the main bed. Sometimes a trundle mattress may not be as deep in order to fit in the drawer.

Here are some frequently asked questions by our customers that you may find helpful in finding a trundle drawer.

What Age Is Appropriate For A Trundle Bed?

A kids bed with a trundle can be used as soon as they have outgrown their cot which is usually around 18-36 months onwards. It is low on the floor so it perfect for little guests to sleep on if they come to stay.

What Is A Trundle Bed Used For?

Trundle beds are designed with a pullout mattress and are great for space-saving. Trundle beds are designed for occasional sleeping use so we wouldn’t recommend using the trundle for long-term use, but it’s there if and when you need it. Not all trundle drawers have wooden slats for their base, quite often they have a solid board base (useful if doubling up as a storage drawer).

Will any trundle drawer fit my bed?

Trundle drawers are specific to a particular bed. They are designed in with the bed frame and so dimensions vary. It is not advisable to buy a trundle drawer that has not been designed for your bed.

Are Trundle Beds Safe?

  • When properly assembled, your trundle drawer will be structurally safe. Safety issues come from not assembling furniture correctly so always read the instructions carefully.
  • We recommend that you only use the correct size mattress for the trundle as specified on the product page to ensure that it fits within the drawer.
  • Regularly check the drawer is free from damage, and that all fixings and parts are secure.
  • Do not use substitute parts that are not designed for use with the trundle. Always contact us for replacement parts.
