How to Find the Perfect Kids Beds

How to Find the Perfect Kids Beds

With so many  kids beds on the market it might feel a bit overwhelming looking at all the options. How will you be able to find the perfect bed that’s right for your child. Here at Room to Grow, we’re experts in children’s beds, and have been creating happy spaces since 1996. We’ve highlighted the key things you should consider when searching for the perfect kids bed. We hope you find this helpful in your search!

Consider your child's age and size

The primary factor when purchasing a bed for your child is their age and size. If your child’s a little one under 3 and moving from a cot to their first big bed, they’ll have very different requirements to that of a tween moving into teenage years. If you're considering a mid sleeper, high bed or bunk bed, the recommended minimum age for a raised bed is 6 years +, so certainly not a bed to consider for your toddler!

Putting age to one side for a moment, the size of your child is an important consideration too. For tall children you may prefer to choose a European size bed as it's slightly longer in length than a UK size bed. Worth bearing in mind as it’ll give extra space for your child as they grow. For older teenagers you may need to think about weight if you are considering a raised bed as these beds have weight restrictions to be aware of. Alternatively for children who like to have some extra space, or who move around a lot in their sleep, a double bed may be more suitable. This could be the case whether for a young child or teenager. The most important factor is to make sure to find a bed that will comfortably fit your child and that’s age-appropriate.

Choosing the right Kids beds

Consider the type of bed

This is where it gets tricky! There are so many different types of beds available for children, so it’s important to consider the type of bed that’s most suitable for your child.

For toddlers you may wish to ease the transition from cot to big bed by introducing your child to a toddler bed. This way your little one doesn’t feel ‘lost’ in a big bed. It offers a safe transition and a way for your child to take the next step and feel secure. However, with a toddler bed this will only be suitable for a couple of years before your child is ready for their proper ‘big’ bed.

It may be the case that the perfect kids bed is a traditional  single low bed, easy to climb in and out of and suitable for all ages. It’s the kind of bed that can last through childhood and beyond. If you are thinking about longevity of your purchase, a traditional low bed is a great option.

If you have limited space in the bedroom and are in need of extra storage, a cabin bed with underbed drawers could be the answer. These are suitable from age 4 upwards, due to the extra height on the bed. They’re a great solution for storing clothes, toys and books under the bed.

For children age 6+ there are even more options to choose from. There’s a whole variety of bed types that are perfect for bedrooms with limited space. You could choose a mid sleeper, which is a raised bed with short ladder to climb into bed. The underbed space can be used for storage, a pull out desk for study, or even just space to play or make a cosy den.

Bunk beds are always a popular choice, either for children sharing a bedroom or for a guest bed for sleepovers. The fun of climbing up to the top bunk is endless and this way you have 2 beds in the footprint of a single bed, offering the perfect space saver.

Bunk Beds

You may also wish to consider a high sleeper or loft bed. These are the highest of the raised bed type, with a ladder up to the sleeping space. The underbed space can be used to incorporate a desk, a wardrobe or a sofa chair bed that extends as a guest bed. The combinations that are available under a high sleeper offer a multitude of practical solutions; desks for gaming, a sofa chair bed for sleepovers, drawers and shelving or a wardrobe for storage. High sleepers are popular with older children and teens who tend to spend more time in their bedroom and crave their own personal sanctuary.

There are so many different types of beds, from single beds, day beds, cabin beds, mid sleepers, high sleepers, bunk beds and beds with trundles. Each type of bed has different features and benefits, so consider which type would work best for your child and the space in their bedroom.

Think about the design

Kids beds come in a variety of designs, from simple and classic to colourful and whimsical. You may feel a traditional wooden bed that will last through the years is the best option or you may prefer a themed bed, designed as a car, a fort or a  house that would be better suited to your child at a particular age. Consider the design of the bed and make sure it fits your child's personality and tastes.

Think about safety

When purchasing a bed for your child, their safety is of course a top priority. Make sure that the bed is made from sturdy materials that are strong and robust enough to withstand constant use. For a  toddler bed or raised bed, ensure that it's designed with safety features such as guard rails, ladder steps or handles to help climb the ladder safely and not risk falling out of bed.

Consider your budget

Kids beds come in all price ranges, so consider your budget when shopping for a bed. Set a realistic budget and shop around for the best quality bed within your price range. Another consideration with budget is the longevity of the bed. If you buy a toddler bed your child will outgrow this within a couple of years. Similarly, a theme bed will have a limited life span as your child will tire of this as they age and a novelty bed may only be a novelty for a few years. A mid sleeper, high bed or bunk bed will last through the years unless your child gets fed up of climbing the ladder and decides they have outgrown their bed. A traditional bed, single or double will most likely last for many years and present good value for money, albeit not the most exciting option!

There are many things to consider when finding the perfect kids bed. You child’s needs and tastes are sure to change as they grow, so bear this in mind. It’s thought that most children will have an average of 4 beds throughout their childhood from birth through to teenage years.
