As the days get shorter and the temperatures get lower, we can’t help but pine for the summer sun. Luckily the winter holidays don’t all have to be about hats, scarves, and little red noses (we’re talking kids not Rudolphs, obviously). This Christmas, why not cheer up your family with some well-deserved winter sun? Here’s our pick of the best winter holiday destinations.
Cyprus
A long-time British summer family favourite, the picturesque mountains, beautiful beaches, and ancient landmarks of Cyprus are just as worth visiting in the winter, when temperatures can be as high as they are during our British summers. Expect vibrant resorts, breathtaking coastlines and the warmest welcome in the Med.
How hot are we talking? Daytime temperatures can range anywhere from 17-20 degrees.
Mexico
From ancient ruins to miles of unspoilt beaches, Mexico really does have something for all the family. For the best resorts, we recommend looking to the white sandy beaches of the east coast and the Yucatan peninsula; it stays warmer and drier here throughout the year.
How hot are we talking? A balmy average of 24 degrees in winter.
The Canary Islands
With no fewer than seven different islands to choose from, it’s no wonder the Canaries are such a popular holiday destination. For family holidays, we recommend Tenerife and Gran Canaria for their child-friendly resorts, bustling beaches, wildlife parks, and impressive mountains.
How hot are we talking? A ‘let’s hit the beach’ average of 18 to 25 degrees.
The Caribbean
Nowhere does tropical better than the Caribbean. Whether you choose Jamaica, Caicos, St Lucia or one of the other numerous paradise islands, expect crystal clear turquoise waters, lush surroundings, and plenty of warm winter weather.
How hot are we talking? Anywhere between 25 and 29 degrees. Take us there now!
SE Asia
If you have slightly older children or ones who don’t mind travelling a bit further, you can’t go wrong with a winter trip to Southeast Asia. Choose from the likes of Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, and the Philippines or take the whole family on the journey of a lifetime through them all. Either way you’ll experience incredible culture, amazing food, and welcomes as warm as the weather.
How hot are we talking? Winter temperatures can range from 26 degrees to the low 30s, although make sure to check when the rainy season falls in your chosen destination if you want to avoid wet weather.
Australia or New Zealand
Of course, if you want to experience the ultimate in winter sun you’re going to have to switch tropics! Australia and New Zealand enjoy their summer while we’re suffering through our winter so these are the places to head for a true summery December experience.
How hot are we talking? It depends where you’re staying but expect temperatures from the mid 20s to the high 30s. Heaven!
