When should your baby transition to a toddler bed?

When should your baby transition to a toddler bed?

Transitioning your baby from their cot to a toddler bed is a big milestone! But when is the best time to make the switch? Typically, most babies are ready to make the switch around 18 to 24 months old, or when they’re 90cm tall.

Some parents choose to do so around 18 months, while others wait until their child is closer to 3 years old. There isn’t necessarily a “right” answer, as every family is different and will have their own unique circumstances. If your child’s closer to 3 years old, they may be ready to make the transition to their first ‘big bed’ and the sense of independence that brings. But if they’re on the younger side, around 18 months old, they may still need a bit more time in their cot. You know your child best, so use your parenting instincts as well.

Look for signs that your baby is outgrowing their cot. Once your little one starts standing up or trying to climb out of the cot, it's time to start thinking of transitioning them into a toddler bed. Be mindful that if your child can stand up in their cot and the top of the rail reaches chest height, it’s safest to move your child out into their own bed. If your little one has a habit of clambering out, even if they’re not quite so tall, then a toddler bed might also be a safer option.

What are Toddler Beds?

Toddler beds are designed for young children who are still getting used to sleeping in their own room and on their own. They're typically small and low to the ground, with rails that can be removed once your child has developed a sense of safety and comfort in their new environment.

Our Lark toddler beds are a favourite with customers. Available in white or grey, they’re both stylish and practical.

What should I consider when choosing a Toddler Bed?

Safety

Safety is always important when choosing furniture for young children and will no doubt be top of your list. If you have a cot bed, check that it complies with current regulations (it should have bars spaced no more than 6cm apart). If you have a bed with sides, make sure they are no higher than 1m from the ground and that they can't be climbed or pulled over by a child.

Avoid beds with sharp edges, slats or gaps between them, which could pinch fingers or toes if your child climbs into or out of bed or climbs on top of it. Look for slats that are spaced no more than 10cm apart so your child can't get trapped between them.

Beds with safety rails on the sides help keep young children from rolling off onto the floor while asleep (which often happens during REM sleep).

Once your child is in their new bed, then they might be tempted to explore their room. It’s a new adventure of course! Make sure the space is safe by covering electrical sockets, and moving things like cords out of reach. Likewise, ensure all furniture is anchored to the wall to prevent it tipping over onto little climbers.

Size & Space

Toddler beds are smaller than single beds and help your child feel safe and not 'lost' in a large bed. When they have had the security of a cot it just helps with the transition. They are also a good option if bedroom space is limited. If your little one’s in a box room, then having a toddler bed may free up space for extra furniture like bookshelves or wardrobes. You’ll also find toddler beds with storage drawers underneath, which are great for holding bedding, clothes or toys.

Longevity

You'll also want to think about how long you're going to keep your little one in their toddler bed for. If you're planning on moving them into a bigger bed once they turn four or five years old, then this will affect what type of bed you choose too. You may wish to opt for a low single bed, like our Maison House Bed, rather than a smaller toddler bed.

What else?

Decorating your toddler’s bedroom

Once you’ve chosen the right bed for your child, don’t forget to have fun with decorating too. You probably won’t want to do a full refresh of their nursery, but simple changes like pictures, curtains, bedding and storage can update the look. Why not have your child help pick out sheets and covers for their new bed to make it their own personal space. This is your toddler’s space now and it should reflect their growing personality!

Cot Bed & Toddler Bed Mattresses

It's important to choose a mattress that is comfortable for your child. You may want to look at different types of mattresses (sprung or foam) as well as different types of mattress springs (open coil, pocket sprung etc). You should also ensure that the mattress fits snugly into its base so it doesn't move around when your child moves around in bed.

Firm to medium-firm mattresses are a good choice for young children as they provide enough support for your child’s spine and neck as they grow.

Bedding

Bed linen is usually not necessary for very young children, but once children start sleeping on their own you can give them duvets and pillows.

Mattress protectors are a great idea for young children. They’ll keep the mattress nice and clean, and reduce the clean up needed for any night-time accidents.

How to introduce a toddler to their new bed

Introducing a toddler to their new bed can be both exciting and nerve-wracking! Changing sleeping arrangements is a big adjustment for any young one and toddlers are no exception. It's important to make the transition as smooth as possible so your toddler feels safe, secure and comfortable in their own environment.

Start by showing them around their bedroom and letting them explore. Be sure to keep all of their favourite toys, books, and stuffed animals within arm's reach as they adjust to their new space. These favourite items will help bridge the gap and create familiarity in their new sleep situation.

Have your child help set up the bed and pack up the cot or get it ready for the new sibling. If your child asks for it back, remind them that it is packed up or not their bed anymore and praise them for being grown up and making the move. A bit of reassurance and praise will help them accept the transition.

Have fun making their bedtime routine something special with a cosy song, story time or reading aloud together - it's important to create positive, consistent memories for your child during the transition so they can associate pleasant feelings with the process.

With a bit of kindness, patience, and understanding you'll have your little one feeling snug in their own bed in no time!

All in all, transitioning your baby from a cot to a toddler bed can be an exciting and challenging process. Take the time to assess whether your little one is ready for this big step and select the right toddler bed that fits their needs. Don’t forget to involve them in the process by finding ways on how to make the transition easier and keep their beloved items nearby so they feel safe and comfortable.

The key is creating a safe and secure environment where your toddler will feel welcome and happy as they explore this new milestone. Your patience, guidance, and care will help create positive associations with their sleeping space, so they quickly adjust to sleeping in a new bed.
